Back in 1944, Marie Werking founded the Animal Welfare Society as Howard County's first incorporated animal shelter, with a mission to rescue and care for animals. In 1951, The Animal Welfare Society became an IRS 501c, which allows us to accept tax deductible donations. We have kept Werking's vision alive for well over 70 years now. It's taken a lot of love, hard work and dedication, but the animals make every day a joy for us!

We have various breeds of dogs, cats, and small animals that are able to proudly call the AWS home. We provide exceptional individual loving care to each and every one of our pets daily. This is a no-kill shelter, for we believe in providing love and an opportunity to everyone.
